I have to say that you are doing it completely wrong.  

right click on the NetworkManager icon in your task bar select "Edit 
Connections"  then select the "Mobile Broadband" tab.  Then choose to add a 
new connection.   if it doesn't recognise your modem then you need to file a 
bug against hal-info  to have the correct info in 
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi which will then let 
NM know you have a mobile broadband modem.
