The Linux environment has been evolving much faster than Unix--after all, Unix has had 30+ years to settle down (and believe me when I tell you in the early years in Unix I saw some really hairy problems!), while each new Linux distro is assembling a complex system from sometimes disparate components. If your Debian systems are older, or weren't maintained in a consistent manner, I could easily see you having severe problems.
