I searched everywhere for a solution and even posted my problem on Compiz's Forum waiting for a resolution, but I wanted to post this specific request here seeking the answer to manually disable the desktop-effects. I gave up trying to fix it. I did locate: ~/.gnome2/sessions, deleted this file, and then had to go back in as this user (the white screen of death went away), but had to set everything up again which was quicker than trying to pick through the mess and waste even more time.
