Are you actually using lilo?  GRUB's the default with Fedora, and if you
are using it, you can hit the "e" key when the menu appears to
temporarily edit how the computer will boot.

     1. e to edit the menu
     2. cursor down to the cursor line
     3. e to edit that line, append a blank space and the number 3 to
        the end of the line
     4. enter
     5. enter (it should now boot in text-only mode)
     6. log in as root
     7. run "system-config-display --reconfig"
     8. reconfigure your display
     9. repeat from step 7, configuring differently if it fails
    10. run "telinit 5", when you succeed, to continue on into graphical
        mode.
