It doesn't have to be linear. You could use the good old "binary chop"
method, i.e. order your plugins from 1 to N. Remove plugins 1 to N/2 and
test. If the problem goes away, restore N/4 to N/2 and repeat. You get
the idea (see any basic computer science textbook on binary searching).
This will take worst case Log_2(N) tests.
