I defer to your opinion. I don't really understand the automatic update process. 
Usiing yum as root is much more transparent to me.

I don't think so. Repos are also somewhat of a mystery to me right now, so I don't fool 
with them. I did look for books on yum on Amazon, but didn't see anything that looked 
useful to me.
