It's not actually necessary to install switchdesk. You can simply edit a
config file, e.g.:

# cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop
#!/bin/sh
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
#

Followed by "init 3; init 5".

Also, the mechanics of choosing which desktop to run in a given session
depend on the Display Manager (usually kdm or gdm).
