The install disk will permit either text or graphical.
Read the startup prompt...  I think you need to type "linux text"
Same disk just pass in some hints...`   
	linux
	linux text
	linux rescue

Also some 'older' systems DVD does not play well so I keep CDROMs handy.
Note check to see if the drive is a DVD or CDROM (i.e. double check the
hardware).   I tend to burn both DVDs and CDROMs in the first couple
weeks of a distro release because I commonly get stuck working on some
old system that does not have a DVD reader.   When you said "old system"
I naturally reached for a set of CDROMs in my mind.
