I got it to run.   

I went into the .kde folder for my user and found that there were 3
symbolic link files (2 cache-xxx, 1 tmp-xxx) that were no longer
pointing to folders.  I deleted them and then I was able to start my
session without any problems.

I hope this helps someone.
