So what do we do when we want to install a program that expects to find

For libGL,
yum install mesa-libGL-devel

Already installed, but gmerlin's configure can't find it. There is no libGL.so link, but I can make that from libGL.so.1 which is installed.

not sure about libMesaGL. what needs that?

gmerlin, which is a dependency of OpenMovieEditor.

And in the most recent release, gmerlin has gained a gmerlin-dependencies, which does not include the GL and GLX stuff, and building that needed 'yasm' for the X264 stuff. After that, all the dependencies built and installed themselves in a tree in /opt/gmerlin. I rather like that separation. Then after making the libGL.so link, I tried building gmerlin-all again, and it blew up with this, which may be an ld.so.conf problem:

gcc -D_REENTRANT -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -I/usr/local/include -Wall -Wmissing-declarations -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/opt/gmerlin/lib -o .libs/bgavdump bgavdump.o ../lib/.libs/libgmerlin_avdec.so -L/usr/local/lib /usr/local/lib/libgavl.so

Smells like you need the faad stuff from Livna as well.
