The funny thing is that on this system I can't get anything from the onboard sound, and I frequently get a 'falling back to pulse-audio'. So far, PA has played everything.

The problem is that for telephony or sound recording you really need recording. It doesn't matter how well it plays sound you have, if you can no longer get new sound in.
