I realized that. ;)  Yes, the Z51 works fine.

Nothing else to report from the kernel log; just hundreds of these:

usblp1: error -32 reading printer status

Google turns up only a very small number of hits for this, none of which
shed any light on the matter for me. 

Any suggestions most welcome.

This couldn't be a usb1 vs usb2 issues, could it?  Have you tried swapping the cables on the two usb printers to see what happens?  Or tried a different usb cable?
