If I boot into runlevel 3, the text consoles all work just as they should.

I'm not terribly fluent in X windows (ok, basically if it does anything other than work fine I'm hopeless :-) but I believe it to be the ATI radeon driver.  There's mention of "radeon" in the xorg.conf
