I think my experience was caused by hald(8), soon to join selinux on my personal bone yard. Just killing the daemon had no positive effect. I believe the relocation of the mount points was caused by a typo in my fstab. If my guess is correct the error was a harmless trailing slash, '/', on a mount point. I prefer to know where my file systems are mounted, and so do the scripts I write. Not in some (to me) obscure system directory. This might not be a bad idea on some USB attached thumb drive, but not on a 200 GB [PS]ATA drive just being added to the system, I prefer an error message to help for which I didn't ask.
