There is actually a bug on this
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3654
in which an nvidia employee shows up and says "yes this doesn't work and
we're not going to do anything about it" then refuses to explain why and
marks it "WONTFIX." I almost threw the card out the window when I saw that.
The problems apparently have to do with using the BIOS to program the
video modes. The nouveau driver actually does fix a lot of this stuff,
but you have to include
Option "Randr12" "true"
under "Device" in xorg.conf. Works for me now.
