Actually, I found that Alt-Ctrl-F1 to get a text console
and then Alt-Ctrl-F7 to get back again
seems to be a less drastic solution.

Also, as you say, it sometimes seems to be
just a matter of waiting for 30 seconds or so
for the message to get through.
