One thing to look at is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

What I'm seeing it do is deduce completely bogus information
about the display, which, naturally, leads to a rotten
screen.

Just for grins, I tried building the nouveau driver and hard
coding the correct panel size where it queries the wrong size,
but that didn't work (not that I expected it too - no doubt
things are more interrelated than a simple hack like that
can fix :-).
