Some chips with multiple registers have built in write order
dependencies i.e. writing register b won't take effect until register a
is written.  If the documentation is not clear, or the software driver
author has not read the datasheet, or the information is just not in the
data sheet, but common knowledge of the in house developers, then you
get the I tell you three times effect, as the dependencies all work
their way through the sequence.
