I got that too, on several machines.
Turns out my /etc/X11/xorg.conf still referred to an X11 font server,
which now is deprecated.
I renamed xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and restarted.
I assumed a new xorg.conf would be generated, with all the right
options.
It turns out the new X11 does not need a conf file anymore.
It started right away, with the right driver, at the right resolution
And all the problems you mentioned were gone.
