Has anyone run into this problem or know of a way to fix it?
Yes.

My solution is using the latest f8 kernel-2.6.24.5-85.fc8, when I want to run vmware-server-1.0.5 Since I also use the f9 kernel, I made my runlevel 4 not have vmware service activated, and modified my grub for the newer kernel to start runlevel 4.

Get's around the incompatibility for me ;-)
