OK, I tried that. On attempting a playback (from the Apple site) I get a
browser message that that xine-plugin has started and a grey window
appears in the middle of the page. No video or audio, and pgrep shows
xine is not running (presumably it terminated). This isn't markedly
different from what happened before installing libquicktime.
