There's a thread (begun April 27) on this list, which has gotten surprisingly little attention. It claims pirut is to be obsoleted. Is this true?? Is there some other front end for yum that has the same abilities to find apps, by type and by list, without knowing their exact names

yumex?

I think the idea is to move to packagekit, although I'd have to check to
be completely sure.

Pirut got replaced by PackageKit or more specifically gpk-application. Yumex is still in the repository as a alternative.
