What do you mean by "several install attempts"? What was going wrong
there?
As for suggestions, I'd probably start off using rpm to verify the
installation. An fsck wouldn't hurt either.
If those don't identify the problem, I'd try booting up to the
different init states, and logging in. Single user first, init 2,
and then init 3. The idea being to first establish what does work,
if rpm verifies that everything was installed correctly.
Once you know what does work, you can proceed to establish where the
failure is.
I'd also be curious as to what's running on port 22. netstat is your
friend there.
