I believe it was in FC6 that there was a long discussion about how you can 
tell whether the usb device is umounted.  My defences are two-fold - I always 
wait a few moments after it says that the device is removed, and wherever 
possible I run gkrellm with sdx showing, so that I can see a couple of 
seconds of clear after the last flush.
