if you go back thru early man pages, you will probably not find it mentioned
in them either.

this is a 'catch 22'. to administer a system, you should know all commands
and what they do. so, if you know what umount is and you know what sync is,
then you should know to sync before umount.

to know what is *supposed* to go on during umount, eject or what ever, it
would be necessary to go to _source_code_. a lot of reading that can be saved
just by typing 4 letters and pressing up arrow twice, and know that your ass
is covered and data is safe.
