The upgrade to KDE 4.0.3 will not hose KMail. The kdepim we are shipping is 
still the same kdepim 3.5.9 you're used to (because kdepim is not included in 
KDE 4.0, it will be in 4.1) and it works just fine in KDE 4.

The issue you may be referring to was purely a dependency issue and is already 
fixed, see:
