H&S is a critical reference that belongs on every C programmer's shelf, but it's no help at all for learning programming. There's lots of good stuff in kernel code, but a lot of it is highly specific to its task. I don't have a good beginner's reference, unfortunately. For an intermediate text, Kernighan and Ritchie is my favorite.
