You need to run it as:
system-config-printer-applet --no-tray-icon
By default, the tray icon will only show if there are print jobs in
the
queue.

Nothing happens. Oh, I can see the HD chew on it for a moment but
then I guess the moment is gone. No errors, no output, no windows....
Well, you'll be happy but confused as I am but upon rebooting the
system, all of the print que viewing links are now working although I
didn't change anything on my system. I've used, printed and rebooted
the system about a 100 times and suddenly it's working.... "They're
coming to take me away, ha, ha!"
