Normally the CTRL-ALT-DELETE is mapped to reboot, perhaps this is what is happening. This is set up in /etc/inittab and can be changed to run any command you want (e.g. /bin/true to do nothing). CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE will normally kill X and return you to the text login prompt.
