I got it working. There were several how to's out there but the one i used had a slightly different approach for the file /etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo_chat that has to be created. Ultimately i followed these scripts on this page :

I took into account that my card was slightly different than the one used for the initial steps but the rest worked quite well.  Now i just have to make sure this is all automated because the end user will be leaving town and i don't want any middle of the night phone calls. Thanks again for the suggestions and links.
