Why?
There are two reasons:
1. I would like the other software to be GUI-agnostic, incorporating the
look of the chosen GUI, avoiding duplicating libraries and such.
2. Then that would have served as an abstraction layer that other GUIs
could be written towards. Maybe more GUIs could emerge as replacements,
both for more choice and, more importantly, easy replacement if
necessary for political or technical reasons, or plain preferrence.
There are downsides too, such as it limiting evolution of the GUIs if
the 'standard' was too strict, but then it wouldn't get such a status in
the first place.
