Hi Ric. Which Fedora version are you using? I've got F8, and all the earlier
ones available, apart from FC4. Just for the hell of it I had a go at running
a few audio apps at the same time on F8. Just a bit of info though. This
machine does have an audigy2 soundblaster, which is capable of multiple audio
streams. Also I did disable pulseaudio which was causing me problems on F8,
by removing alsa-plugins-pulseaudio, which also removed
kde-settings-pulseaudio (I use KDE).

Anyway. Xawtv is playing a TV show, The BBC iPlayer, which uses realplayer is
playing, and running /usr/sbin/lsof -n | grep /dev/dsp shows the following.
[djmons@localhost ~]$ /usr/sbin/lsof -n | grep /dev/dsp
realplay. 19458 djmons 10w CHR 14,3
5983 /dev/dsp
[djmons@localhost ~]$

Now I open MhWaveedit, which is set to use Alsa, and play an .ogg file, and
also open Qjackctl, start jack, and open ZynAddSubFX, and play along with
the .ogg. So 4 audio apps playing at once.

No bragging going on here Ha Ha Ha. Seriously though, I wonder why your
getting problems after updates.

IIRC Dmix enters the arena for cards that arn't capable of multiple audio
streams, and enables you to play more than one app at the same time on more
recent versions of Fedora. I'm not sure at which Fedora version Dmix was
setup to just work. I know it isn't on my FC2 install on the other machine
that has an Ensoniq card (ens1371 driver). On FC2 if I start the BBC iPlayer
using Firefox, or Opera, realplayer (which uses OSS) grabs /dev/dsp, and no
other sound apps will work at the same time. If I start Opera as "aoss
opera" (presuming that you have the alsa-oss package installed), I can run
other audio apps at the same time. I also have FC5, and 6 on the machine with
the Ensoniq card, and am sure that at least FC6 has Dmix setup to just work.
I can't try it out at the mo, because I'm posting from FC2 on the same
machine.

You cannot stop, and start Alsa on recent Fedora versions, but there is a
command to stop, and start Dmix/Dsnoop, or at least was. I can't find it on
F8, and forgot to write it down. Perhaps it was on F7. I'll have to look
through the old emails to find the command.

Just some Wednesday afternoon ramblings on never ending sound problems, but
they do keep us focused though, or is that focussed. Damn it, both spellings
look wrong.

All the best Ric.

Nigel.
