I've been experimenting with exactly that idea (x86_64 only, no 32-bit stuff at all) ever since I set up this computer with F8/x86_64 a while back. It's working fine, with the obvious exception that you can't run i386 software on it. Not a problem for most stuff. If you try it and don't like it, I think you could put it back to being a i386-capable machine by simply removing that line from yum.conf and installing some i386 software.
