What I have done while I work out the NIS is to do it the old fashioned way- create a login on each machine for each user and setup shares on each machine for local use, and then I'll have to work out a way to share between systems. The reason I haven't done this earlier is I'm just switching my entire network to OSS. I'd only really worry about NIS if you have many machines to work with. I have 2 laptops, and a desktop which is my server (which I have yet to change over). The reason why I'm changing to NIS is due to more machines being added - like media server, another desktop, web server, dns server, and so on... If you only have 3 -5 machines and you're not familiar with NIS, I'd start there and if the need arises look into it and change then. If you have laptops, which can be taken away and used elsewhere, you might want to consider how your data is going to interact. So this is one point where I'm taking my time to figure out a solution. I could use samba, but seeing as I'm not using windows anymore I think I'll try and find a *nix based solution. I may use webDav maybe, not sure: fellow listers I would welcome some input here. The best solution for a dynamic share system. I know I'll need to use rsync or something for some files while off network.
