Thanks very much.
Going to K=>Multimedia=>KMix and Settings=>Configure KMix
clicking on Apply brought the speaker icon into the panel.

I had tried the KMix applet to the panel,
but this was a much larger icon containing a number of switches,
which was not what I wanted.
