Well I still think your right but...

It seams I've already tried to disable yum-updatesd...
I've unchecked it in the System>admin>Services dialog
And when I click on stop it says it's stopped. But next reboot/startx
and it's running again, letting it notify something to give me that
danged pop-up message.

Now puplet is another matter. I can't find anything that looks like it
in the list of services in System>admin>Services.

But if I click on view updates in that annoying pop-up message I get to
give my root password because of attempting to run "pup" which then wants
me to insert the fedora 8 install disk.... (cancel)

/usr/bin pup is a link pointing to an elf binary named consolehelper.
And /usr/bin/puplet is a complex script that I can't quite follow.

yum remove consolehelper
yum remove pup
yum remove puplet

All fail to find matches to remove... {sigh}

Hmmmmnnn maybe if I edit puplet to comment out the whole script and
insert one executable line:
echo "what, run puplet? haha hahaha!"
And remove all the yum-updatesd links from /etc/rc.d/rc*.d.

That seams to work for now...
But probably the next yum update will re-install working copies...
{sigh}
Any suggestions?
