Let me rephrase...

When I installed FC8 on top of the old Sabayon linux 16 gig partition:
/dev/sda6 I manually copied the /boot from the 16 gig /dev/sda7 where
mepis still calls it /dev/hda7. I copied that /boot to the 960 Meg
/dev/sda3

It is the /dev/sda3 partition to which I'd like to install grub
as a stand alone, containing only those files you say to install,
(once I have time to understand the grub docs) And the /boot I've
already installed there. {Including the vmlinuz & initrd I hand copied
from /dev/sda6 to boot FC8 with.}

I Still need to install a new updated Sabayon on /dev/sda7 Then I need to
use apt-get upgrade on the kubuntu installed on the 16 gig /dev/sda5.
I will need to do this before I've had time to properly study a stand
alone grub.

So let me now ask if I can safely just mount /dev/sda3 on boot in FC8?
Then run FC8's version of "grub-install /dev/sda"? So that when I install
Sabayon on /dev/sda7 it won't break the grub boot strap process in the mbr??

If this was my old desktop I'd have checked The result first with a
"grub-install /dev/fd0" and been sure it was what I wanted in my mbr
before I overwrote it... I'm just nervous about depending on a
cd or dvd "boot partition" menu option, if I guess wrong...

If I can, then that would at least buy me until I eventually upgrade or
replace FC8... which should mean at least 6 to 12 months before I need
to really understand grub...
