I eventually got this to play but not without more fiddling.
the first link 'the phantom from 10000 leagues', I clicked the QT 500Kbps got
a new page which mplayerplug-in promptly dies on, so looking at the url on
the command line with $mplayer -v
http://www.scififree.tv/unicast_mov/AFTVSciFiH264500.mov dies as well but
with some clues i.e
--- HTTP DEBUG HEADER --- START ---
protocol: [HTTP/1.1]
http minor version: [1]
uri: [(null)]

 9 - Content-Type: video/quicktime
--- HTTP DEBUG HEADER --- END ---
the content-length of 792 says the server is giving us the true location of
the content so lets try $mplayer -v -playlist
http://www.scififree.tv/unicast_mov/AFTVSciFiH264500.mov well no joy either,
so lets take a look at this file $wget -Svc
http://www.scififree.tv/unicast_mov/AFTVSciFiH264500.mov in this file at the
end is an rtsp url rtsp://video2.multicasttech.com/AFTVSciFiH264500.sdp but
this did'nt work oh why you ask? because of my firewall you have to accept
packets from video2.multicasttech.com or 63.105.122.35 to view. I've seen a
lot of these QT servers not work until you open your firewall to them first.
(black & white movies in high-def what is this world coming to :-) )

p.s I'm using my own recent build of mplayer r25850
