Plenty of software vendors package sun's java with their software and it will install anywhere...try installing Dell OMSA package on a Dell Server Again, since Sun builds the rpm, they have control over postinstall scripts that can do whatever including building symlinks, installing browser plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins or whatever should occur on an install process.
