Fedora Sound - working as root

As a user I got the following while running xmms:

]$ xmms

** WARNING **: Failed to open font: "-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-10-*".

** WARNING **: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:0 failed: No such device Message: alsa_setup(): Cannot set mmap'ed mode: Invalid argument. falling back to direct write
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream.

** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Unable to install hw params
xmms: pcm_pulse.c:115: pulse_stop: Assertion `pcm->stream' failed.
Aborted

As root, if I disable mmap mode it works.
As a user (disabling mmap mode) it still does not work.

First, what is mmap mode and is disabling it ok?
Next, seems like a permission problem. What do I have the
change the permissions of to get xmms to work with an
ordinary user using Fedora 8?

Thanks

Richard
