This isn't a direct answer to your question, but you would be better off to
tunnel your vnc connection over ssh. It's no more difficult to set up than
"regular" vnc and it's a lot more secure.
Whether that's true depends on the topography of the network. It's
certainly not true here, and encrypting traffic needlessly simply slows
things down.
