You may be running network manager, and it is shutting down ath0
when you bring up eth0. Or you could have eth0 configured wrong, so
that the default route changes when you bring up eth0. You need to
fix this before you can start setting up IP masquerading. There are
plenty of HOWTOs on how to set up IP masquerading, and it is fairly
simple once you have your network problem fixed.
