Fedora 8 Via Rhine II broken?

I was previously using Fedora 6.

A fresh install of Fedora 8 x86_64 results in repeated network failures.  Essentially, on first login, although /sbin/ifconfig shows eth0 to be up with the correct ip address, pinging a locally connected host (192.168.1.1) results in 'ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable' errors.  Performing '/sbin/ifdown eth0 ; /sbin/ifup eth0; /sbin/ping 192.168.1.1' restores the network connection temporarily.  However, browsing the web via firefox soon again leads to 'ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable' errors.  If I don't browse the web, I do not receive 'ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable' errors for a long period of time (I did not wait beyond 8 minutes).  If I browse, then the network quickly goes down again. This problem persists after reboot, and after bringing the network up with 'System -> Administration -> Network'.  It persists after killing nm-applet.  There are no new lines in /var/log/messages when the network fails. Comparing the periods of when the network interface is working to when it is not working, the outputs of /sbin/ifconfig is unchanged except for the transmitted/received packets, and the output of /sbin/route is unchanged.

Installing Fedora 8 i386 initially results in a working network interface without the above problems, however, this problem has now developed on the i386 install, too.
