Where do I find the easy way through to a min install??
I was thinking on this very issue this am, while out for my post-dawn
stroll.
I sometimes want to build an appliance, typically a server with one
fuction, maybe a backup server, a print server, a firewall, or just a
basic Linux system to help rescue a broken Windows.

Would Revisor possibly work for you for something like this. Create
your own iso with revisor, you could make it very minimal with
everything you want.
I presume you're speaking to me?
debian does it easily, with no frigging around at all. And, if I want
openvpn, dar, bacula, amanda. backuppc, Xephyr, or Bozotic, it's just an
apt-get away.
