This web page was what I found when first researching the problem of the
gui's (both xmaxima and wxmaxima) not starting maxima. But it was not
the answer. By adding 127.0.0.1 to the /etc/hosts config file, the gui's
work. I'm not sure why 127.0.0.1 was not in the file - it seems to be
included by default.
