Write '1+2;' instead of '1+2'. May I offer you a suggestion? There is now an excellent gui for maxima, which is called wxmaxima and is available from the usual repositories. See: http://wxmaxima.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page Wxmaxima adds the ';' automatically to the end the instructions.
