That sounds more like what I want to do. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
LTSP seems to be very close to what I want. If it had better support for
wireless networking, it would be pretty much what I want.
Another option is to boot something like Knoppix from CD with "linux 3"
at the boot prompt so it will start in text mode, then do
X -query server
to log into a desktop on a machine running xdm (kdm/gdm).
