Nods in agreement...  The pace is too rapid, considering the radical
changes between releases.  It'd be less of a pain if OS and applications
weren't so interdependent.

What app can't be built for many versions of the OS - or many OS's for that matter? Most of the interdependence happens at build/packaging time. The app developers do a lot of work to avoid it in the code itself.
