To get over this, I usually adjust the system to force all sound through a specific daemon (in my case, PulseAudio), and only allow that daemon direct access to the ALSA/OSS port; other daemons either access PulseAudio directly or are tricked by the PulseAudio ALSA plugin into thinking they're sending to ALSA when they're actually sending to PulseAudio.
