Generally, when sound acts stupid, it's usually because one of the sound 
daemons (aRts, ESound...) have taken control of the system and won't let 
anything else access it properly.  To get over this, I usually adjust the 
system to force all sound through a specific daemon (in my case, PulseAudio), 
and only allow that daemon direct access to the ALSA/OSS port; other daemons 
either access PulseAudio directly or are tricked by the PulseAudio ALSA 
plugin into thinking they're sending to ALSA when they're actually sending to 
PulseAudio.  If you want to know how to do that, see here:
