Hi, Andrew,
Tarballs do get corrupted. I have had it happen. It is rare, but not
entirely discountable. The problems with archives and tarballs being
corrupted is well known, and that is why sha1sums and other check sum
methods are used to verify the files contents after transmission. And
for what it is worth, I have had them untar successfully when they were
corrupted.
